  6. 1.- -Walt Kowalski:  is a Polish-American former auto worker who becomes embroiled in a conflict involving a Hmong family and a gang. Walt Kowalski had served in the Korean War and had killed a Korean boy who had been trying to surrender to him. Walt Kowalski has bitter memories of the conflict. He is a retiree who formerly worked at a Ford automobile plant for much of his life, and he owns a Gran Torino he had personally built. He also owns an M1 Garand rifle. Walt's wife, Dorothy Kowalski, is dead by the beginning of the film.

-Thao Vang Lor: is a young Hmong American boy who is coerced by a Hmong gang to attempt to steal Walt Kowalski's Gran Torino. Walt often calls Thao "Toad."

-Sue Lor: is a Hmong American girl who is Thao's older sister. She is the first of Walt Kowalski's Hmong neighbors to befriend him after he rescues her. She has a streetwise, witty personality and a strong, independent spirit; she easily gets along with Walt despite his grumpiness. She teaches Walt about the Hmong people's history and struggles in American culture, and the two of them realize that they share something in common of being "betrayed"; Walt by his own family and the Hmong people by the United States despite fighting alongside them in the Vietnam War.

-Father Janovich:  Father Janovich is a Catholic priest who tries to cajole Walt Kowalski into doing confession. Janovich works with the Hmong people in the community. Although Walt initially rebuff's Janovich's efforts, he persists and gradually comes to an understanding of Walt and his motives. Janovich constantly reminds Walt of his wife's desire for him to go to confession, which he does just before he dies. At the end of the film, he proclaims that only after knowing Walt did he really understand what life and death is.

-Spider:  Fong is Thao's cousin, shot caller the gang, and the main antagonist.

2.- He is angry because his wife has died and his kids love him only because there is a promise of an inheritance. He is also the only American in the neighbourhood.

3.-At first he hates the people in his neighbourhood because they are Hmong but then he begins to love them because he realises that they are the only friends he has.

4.- At the end of the film he is shown as a non-racist person. In fact he sacrifices himself for Thao and his sister.

5.- There are a lot of incidents especially with Thao's cousin “Spider”.

6.- When they invite him over to lunch to celebrate his birthday.

7.- He helps him by getting him a job and sacrificing his life at the end of the film.

8.- His most troubling sin is having killed a young boy which was Thao's age. Because that kid won't ever have the chance to live life.

9.- They aren't very nice but he does it in a caring way.

10.So far, people keep mentioning the city of torino, but i will give you the literal translation of the phrase as a person that speaks some italian. "gran torino" means "large bull". as previously stated, "gran" means large or big. "toro" is the italian word for "bull", "ina/ino" is an italian diminutive which essentially means "small" or "baby". for example, "gatta" is italian for "cat", "gattina" is italian for "little cat" (literally "kitten"). so torino means little bull but people occasionally disregard the ino and just say "bull". i don't know if "large bull" is a metaphor or something but that is the literal translation. hope it helps.

    1)
Walt Kowalski: Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) is a cantankerous, retired Polish American assembly line worker and Korean Warveteran, who has recently been widowed after 50 years of marriage. His Highland Park, Michigan neighborhood in the Detroi area, formerly populated by working class white families, is now dominated by poor Asian immigrants, and gang violence is commonplace. He doesn't get on well with his family.
Thao Vang Lor: is a young Hmong American boy who is coerced by a Hmong gang to attempt to steal Walt Kowalski's Gran Torino. Walt often calls Thao "Toad." With no father in the family, he is expected to be the man of the house, but he lacks direction and initially does chores at the direction of his sister Sue. Thao is soon coerced into joining the Hmong gang by his gangster cousins. After Thao clumsily attempts to steal Walt's car as part of his forced gang initiation, he returns home instead of fleeing with the gang. After confessing the attempted crime to his family, Thao's mother and sister bring him to Walt to apologize and make amends to the community as Walt's servant.
Father Janovich: Father Janovich is a Catholic priest who tries to cajole Walt Kowalski into doing confession. Janovich works with the Hmong people in the community. Although Walt initially rebuff's Janovich's efforts, he persists and gradually comes to an understanding of Walt and his motives. Janovich constantly reminds Walt of his wife's desire for him to go to confession, which he does just before he dies
Spider: Is the guy who orders Thao to steal the car and hits him.

    2) Because he doesn't get on well with his family and he is racist at the beginning of the film, and his neighbours, who are Chinese, bother him with his traditions.
    3) He doesn't talk with his neighbours and doesn't accept their presents. He also threats them with a gun.
    4) No, he changes along the film and at the end of it he realises that he mustn't be racist.
    6) When Thao starts working for him and becomes his friend. Also when he goes to his neighbours house to have lunch.
    7) When Spider and his friends hit Thao he defends him. He also helps him to find work and with the girl. At the end of the film he gives Thao his Gran Torino.
8)He murdered thirteen people at the war.
    9) Toad: is a racist name that means disgusting toad (sapo asqueroso)
Yum-Yum: It refears to the Chinese girl, a racist name to call them.
    10) Ford Torino is an automobile which was produced by the Ford Motor Company for the North American market between 1968 and 1976. It was a competitor in the intermediate market segement. The car was named after the city of Turin (Torino, in Italian), considered the Italian Detroit.

-Thao Vang Lor: is Hmong boy. He is Walt´s neighbour and is forced to take part in a gang which tells him to steal Walt´s car. He is very shy and is pretended to be the man in his house. He is helped by Walt and at the end they become really good friends. He also changes a lot through out the film.

-Sue Lor: is Thao´s sister. She is a very nice and brave girl. He is not scared of facing his cousin and ends up winning Walt´s love.

-Father Janovich: is the village´s pastor. He is in charge of controlling Walt and seeing how he is doing. Somtimes he is a bit annoying but he knows Walt´s intentions very well and has some deep conversations with him.

-Spider: is Thao´s cousin and wants him to enter his gang. He is violent and considers himself as the leader. He does´t care about his family, is very persuasive and doesn´t mind hurting people.

5.- There are some moments where you can directly see that the place is infested with gang violence. The one where Sue is stopped by three black people who start pushing her, the one where they want Thao to get into the car and they go after him tryimg to convince him at this house, the one when the try to steal Walt´s car, the one when they hit Thao, the one when they hit Sue and they start shoting to his house and the one at the end where they kill Walt. They act with extremely violence and not thinking of the harm that they are causing.

6.-When he realises that they worry more about him than his sons and he takes more care of them too.

7.-He lends him his tules, teaches everything he knows , finds him a job and lets him take his care. Also he protects him from the gangs and teaches how to behave with girls.

8.- He thinks that he is not capable of confessing that. His most troubling sin is the lifes that he have killed during the war.

  12. GRAN TORINO (Josselyne Sarango Torres)
1.- WALT KOWASLSKI: Walt Kowalski is a grumpy, retired Polish American assembly line worker and Korean War veteran (Walt holds many prejudices towards Asians because of his experience in the Korean War, and more recently because of the success of Japanese automakers), who has recently been widowed after 50 years of marriage.
THAO VANG LOR: Is a young Hmong American boy. Walt often calls Thao "Toad”. With no father in the family, he is expected to be the man of the house, but he lacks direction and initially does chores at the direction of his sister Sue.
SUE LOR: is a Hmong American girl who is Thao's older sister. She has a streetwise, witty personality and a strong, independent spirit; she easily gets along with Walt despite his grumpiness. She teaches Walt about the Hmong people's history and struggles in American culture, and the two of them realize that they share something in common of being "betrayed".
SPIDER: It´s Thao's cousin, shot caller the gang, and the main antagonist.
2.- Because the relationship with his sons isn´t good and his wife have died recently. Also he has asian neighbors and he remembered him, bad experiences about the war.

3.- In the beginning he can't stand his neighbours because they are Asians but at the end of the film they become friends. He dislikes Chinese, japans and filipine people because in the war he has fight against that people.

4.- No because in the end of the film he helps the Asian family and he gives the Gran Torino to Thao.

5.- The gang appear many times in the film such us, when they burned Thao´s face with a cigarette or when they violated Sue.

6.- When he was in one of the celebrations of his neighbors and he felt like in home.

7.- In the first time he goes to the gang´s house and hits one of them. And in the end of the film he sacrificed and police could arrest the gang.

8.- That he killed a young boy in the corean war and he can´t forget his face when he shoot him. That experiece marked his life till the end.

9.- Because he doesn´t have time to learn their names and he isn´t interested un that.

10.- It´s an old and popular car, that is very important to Walt.

Walt Kowalski, portrayed by Clint Eastwood, is a Korean War veteran who served in the US Army and a retired Ford factory worker. He begins the film losing his wife and starts to isolate himself from the rest of his family. He is very racist and hates his next door neighbours, a Hmong family with two kids. But a series of events will change his way of thinking.
Thao, is one of Walt's neighbours. He is a introverted young boy who, wanting to be part of a gang, tries to steal Walt's Gran Torino. To apologize, Thao's family tells Walt that Thao will work for him. As time goes by they both learn a lot from each others and become friends.
Sue is Thao's older sister. She is the first of Walt's Hmong neighbours to befriend him after he rescues her from some boys in the street. She has a witty, strong and independent personality she easily gets along with Walt despite his grumpiness. She teaches Walt about the Hmong people's history and struggles in American culture.
Father Janovich is a young inexperienced Catholic priest who tells Walt that his wife wanted him to look after her husband and try to make him confess his sins.
Spider is Thao and Sue's cousin and the leader of the Hmong gang. He is full of hatred and is very violent.

Because he has a lot of problems: his wife has just died, his son doesn't take him seriously, he doesn't like his neighbours, he has awful memories from when he was in Korea, he is sick...
    3.
He makes inappropiate comments and calls some characters mean nicknames such as Ginny, Swamp Rat, Gook, egg roll...
    4.
We don't think a person can change in so little time, we think that he still is a bit racist but he respects and cares for his neighbours.
    5.
The neighbourhood is filled with low-class immigrants from Asia and Latin America. We can see a scene where a mexian gang and the hmong gang meet in the street and argue. Then, the hmong gang try to make Thao one of their members but first he mut steal Walt's Gran Torino. In the movie gangsters are all men, are very violent and have weapons.
The most shoking scene is the last one when Walt goes to Spider's house and they shoot him.

We also can see two two black gangsters mess with Sue and her friend on their way home.
    6.
When he attends to the Hmong party and people are nice to him because not even his son treats him that well.
    7.
Walt helps Thao get a job and gives him dating advice.
    8.

He doesn't tell him about the war and about all the people he killed, those thoughts have hunted him down all his life.
    9.
We think he messes up their names on purpose and it's very disrespectful that knowing their real names he still calls them by awful nicknames.
    10.
The 1972 Gran Torino in Walt’s garage was a car that he helped build in his days at The Ford Motor Company. During the movie, the gang pressure makes Thao try to steal the car but gets caught. This seemingly stupid action is actually what brings these two personalties together. In the end, he shocks his family by leaving his prized possession to his Hmong neighbor Thao.
