    Discussion Questions

1.- How do you feel right now? What emotions has this film evoked in you? Where do you think those feelings have come from?
We feel frustrated and moved. They come from the discrepancy between our ideas ande the ideas the film show

2.- What do you think this film says about racism in the United States today? How is racism different today than it was thirty years ago, before the Civil Rights Movement?
Not everyone in the USA are neonazis, but a lot of people still discriminating inmigrants but less than 50 years ago.
3.-Do you think white people have access to more power and privilege than black people in the United States? Why do you think that? What do you think of affirmative action programs and other efforts to fight institutional racism?
Yes, because althougt Obama is the president of USA when he came to the power it was shoking. Furthermore still today black people has more difficulties to find a job than white people. We agree because the black people are a important part of the american population so they need representatives in their goverment
4.-What are the attitudes towards women, gays and poor people in this movie? How are these attitudes related to attitudes towards Asians, Hispanics and black people of in this movie?
This film places all of them inferiorly.
5.-Do you know people with racist views? What do you do when you hear racist remarks?
Yes we know and when i hear something racist I get very angry.
6.-Are there organized hate groups in your community? How does your community respond to these groups?
Yes, sometimes they are frightened but anybody do nothing to change it.
7.-Do you think racism can be ended? How?
When the more conservative generation die, the racisim will decrease.

8.- These are Daniel's final words:
So I guess this is where I tell you what I learned - my conclusion, right? Well, my conclusion is: Hate is baggage. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time. It's just not worth it. Derek says it's always good to end a paper with a quote. He says someone else has already said it best. So if you can't top it, steal from them and go out strong. So I picked a guy I thought you'd like. 'We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.'

What do you think? Write out your ideas in a short paragraph.
We agree. You must live in armony with everybody and leave the prejudices aside, It hasnot sense hate someone for her/his skin colour in fact everybody are the same inside ourselves.

1.We feel a bit hurt and sad as this film is really hard and you realize how can the society become just because of politics ideas.
2.Nowadays in the United States the racism is not a big problem because It has almost been eradicated. But 30 years ago It was a huge problem and the black people suffered a lot, but afortunately it is being solved.
3.We think that actually black and white people are at a similar positions in work and in every term, but obiously in the past, before the human rights were written, white people had much more privilegies. The action programmes which make an effort to fight the racism are really important and have a big influence in our society.
4.The acttitudes about gays, women, poor people and the ones who come from other countries are embarrased and horrendous because some white people treat them like they were less than everybody.
5.Not really, but people with this ideology are completely wrong.
6.In our city there are not, but in the news sometimes you hear about them because they cause some damage to the society or even attemps.
7.We supposse yes, but it would be really difficult as many people have a very strong ideology and convincing them that they are wrong would be almost impossible. Racism could be ended by giving the same rights to everybody in the world and putting fines if anybody doesn´t respect a person from other race.
8.We completely agree with Daniel's final conclusion because life is too short to worry about little things and of course we all are friends no matter where we belong to.

1.-This film has made me feel more empathy towards people who suffer racism.

2.-Racism is still a problem but it was worse back then.

3.-In my opinion both have more or less the same access although black people are still being treated differently to white people as we can see from the brutal ways that they are being killed by policemen.

4.-Women and gays aren't treated very well in this film. This makes sense because they are neonazis and they follow Hitler's regime which excluded women, homosexuals and anybody who wasn't of the Arian race.

5.-I don't know anyone with racist views but if I did I would be very scared.

6.- There are no organized groups in my community.

7.-I don't think racism will ever end. There will always be people who are scared of the unknown but the more we get to know these people the more we'll understand that they are just like us.

8.-  Hate will destroy us all, so if we hate people we will never be happy. We have to learn to love each other because in the end we are all the same. It doesn't matter what colour we are, whether we are men or women. We are all equal and we have the same rights.

1.- How do you feel right now? What emotions has this film evoked in you? Where do you think those feelings have come from?

I feel sad because of the end. I felt bad for Daniel because I thought that the revenge was not neccessary. I think this feelings came from that I couldn't help him so I felt useless

2.- What do you think this film says about racism in the United States today? How is racism different today than it was thirty years ago, before the Civil Rights Movement?

There's still people who believes that black people are worse than white ones. Nowadays we don't judge anyone because of the color of the skin, we respect everyone.

3.-Do you think white people have access to more power and privilege than black people in the United States? Why do you think that? What do you think of affirmative action programs and other efforts to fight institutional racism?

No because sometimes in a job interview they choose the black one to make people feel like the company has every type of people in, but maybe the black person wasn't better than other that was white. I think these programmes are good to black people because they should have the same rights as us, but not more.

4.-What are the attitudes towards women, gays and poor people in this movie? How are these attitudes related to attitudes towards Asians, Hispanics and black people of in this movie?

They misstreat women because they have a sexist actitude, also they discriminate gay people. People who is not “white” is not accepted by them.

5.-Do you know people with racist views? What do you do when you hear racist remarks?

Yes we know. We try to explain them that all of us are equal and the color doesn´t matter.

6.-Are there organized hate groups in your community? How does your community respond to these groups?

Yes, but almost always we have a pacific society. Some people just ignore their existance and other people know about them but theydon´t care.

7.-Do you think racism can be ended? How?

I don´t think so because although the situation has improve and we´re more respectful there´s always gonna be someone who is going to think different

8.- These are Daniel's final words:

We think Daniel is right and life is so short to waste it hating anything. Also about the racism we think everyone has the same rights and value. Violence does´t solve anything and we should open our hearts and minds because human beings need eachother. We recive the respect that we give and not the one we think we deserve.<3

It is very sad and disgusting. This feelings come because of the strong nazi ideology of the characters.

2.- What do you think this film says about racism in the United States today? How is racism different today than it was thirty years ago, before the Civil Rights Movement?
Now a days racism is a problem but not as important as years ago.
We don't know what happened thirty years ago or now a days but we think that the situation has changed, although there are some people that aren't educated in equality as we are. Those people are like the characters of the movie.

3.-Do you think white people have access to more power and privilege than black people in the United States? Why do you think that? What do you think of affirmative action programs and other efforts to fight institutional racism?
In theory, both have the same rights and opportunities, but years ago black people couldn't study and as a consecuence, now a days that generation aren't formed so they have less power than white people, that could studied. But in the next years black people will be at the same level as white, an example is the president of the USA, Barack Obama.
We think that some of this efforts are good, but for us the most important one is to help black people to studied at university or something with it can live good.

4.-What are the attitudes towards women, gays and poor people in this movie? How are these attitudes related to attitudes towards Asians, Hispanics and black people of in this movie?
The acctitude is aggressive and evil. Towards this people the attitude is the same. The characters hate those people, in fact one of them murdered two black people.
5.-Do you know people with racist views? What do you do when you hear racist remarks?
No. We stop talking to that people.

6.-Are there organized hate groups in your community? How does your community respond to these groups?
We don't noticed them, if they exist.

7.-Do you think racism can be ended? How?
    Educating the sociaty.

1,I feel very bad, a little bit of sadness at the end of the film and I don't like the end of the film

2,The racism can be change in the future and all the people must do something against it

3,I think it is true because the best jobs are done by white people. I think it because racism is now a days too.

4,Mans are the bosses of the world, they must control the girls and they don´t allow gays because catholicism don´t allow it. They don´t like other people because they feel insulted because of the foreign culture.

5,No, I don´t know anyone whith racists view except my excoach

6,There are organaized people in my culture like Skinshead. People feel fear to them because they are very dangerous and violents.

7,No, I don´t think it because there will be someone who will feel disgusted because of the culture or some other things of black people and be

8,I totally agree with him, we must not be enemies because the color of the skin is not important, the only thing that makes importance is the heart of the people and to be kind whith your brother at your right.

    1) I feel bad, because the younger brother dies at the end of the film, and he hadn't done anything wrong. Also because they are very racists.

    2) Although the situation has improved a lot, we can still find racism in United States.

    3) Yes, white people has more possibilities than black people, for example when a white person and a black one apply for a job, the white person has more possibilities to get it than the black one. Reciently, a black person was murdered by a white policeman and he has not been sent to prison. This shows the racism in United States. The affirmative action programmes are well but they are not working at all.

    4) These people are mistreated and misunderstood. They treat them with inferiority because they think that their ideas are the right ones.

    5) We don't know anyone who is racist but if we knew one, we would try to convince him that what he's doing it's wrong.

    6) No, there aren't any of these groups.

    7) Nowadays is not possible because there still are some people that are racist but if we teach our children not to be like them, racism would stop.

    8) He's right, because what he's saying is that hating people is unnecesary, we are friends and life is too short to waste it with hate. In the film Derek, after staying in the prison, has changed and he is not nazi anymore. Maybe people is able to change their way of thinking.

1.- How do you feel right now? What emotions has this film evoked in you? Where do you think those feelings have come from?

Bad. Sadness and the urge to start punching people. From people being so dumb, racist and borderline retarded. Also, that fat guy is so annoying his mere existance makes me mad.

2.- What do you think this film says about racism in the United States today? How is racism different today than it was thirty years ago, before the Civil Rights Movement?

It says that it still exists, but being racist isn't well-seen, so many actually racist people hide it, reducing damage. I used to be way more common, and even the government was publicaly racist.

3.-Do you think white people have access to more power and privilege than black people in the United States? Why do you think that? What do you think of affirmative action programs and other efforts to fight institutional racism?

No. They have the exact same rights, but if one of the two people applying for a job is just better prepared, he should be the one getting the job. Being a high-school dropout criminal, you shouldn't complain about "the system" not giving you every oportunity.

4.-What are the attitudes towards women, gays and poor people in this movie? How are these attitudes related to attitudes towards Asians, Hispanics and black people of in this movie?

They hate tem for being that way.

5.-Do you know people with racist views? What do you do when you hear racist remarks?

No. Punch the fucking racist whitey

6.-Are there organized hate groups in your community? How does your community respond to these groups?

There used to be, but almost nobody agreed with them and they slowly disappeared.

7.-Do you think racism can be ended? How?

Of course not but we can minimize the damage it causes by making most of the people anti-racism, so they fel bad and don't dare to make public their racism.

I think that kill for your opinions or for your ideas is absolutly innecesary. I think that nazi people were and are murderers, they killed lot of people in the past and they haven't got the respect of the people.

1- We feel disgusted because of the things that appeared on the film. This film has evoked in us feelings of fury because of what the nazis did to other people. This feeling comes from the situation that we have seen on the film and the injustices that are commited

2- Apparently nowadays the situation is better and the rights about racism are regulated but that film shows that in that city the nazis have the power and black people cant live in peace.
Nowadays the situation is better and there are less nazis than before. Black people are more integrated in society and mostly have the same oportunities, although there are exceptions. The situation before the Civil Rights Movement was like the situation in the film or sometimes worse.

3- As for the rights white and black people should have the same power and privilege but there are in some places where black people are still discriminated in some areas. The best example of this is the contreversy that is appearing in the United States because a white policeman has killed a black person and he is not in prison for doind that.
All the affirmative action and programs that are being done to fight racism are really helpful but the are still people who won´t change their mind.

4- The attitude towards them are attitudes of discrimination and ignorance. The use them as objects to do the dirty jobs and if they say no they´ll kill them. They will kill them too if the brag of themselves.
But to some of them they just kill them because they don´t like them and they are not like them.

5- We have heard people making racist comments but we don´t think they are truly racists. When we hear people doing that we tell them to stop.

6- We know that there are organized groups but we don´t know anything about them. The community is afraid of them and sometimes police too so not many things are being done.

7- We would like racism to be ended but we don´t think this is possible because there will always be people who are racists.

8- We think that finally at the end he realises what is the correct thing. It is true that it is very sad to spend all your life hating others instead of enjoying life itself. He comes to a good conclusion but it is really frustrating that he has to live all that life to noticed the bad things he is doing. In Derek´s case with think that it is better late than never but he has hurt a lot of people and has created an army.

  17. AMERICAN HISTORY X (Josselyne Sarango Torres)

1.- I´m fell very unhappy , because the younger brother dies and he doesn´t do anything wrong, he only continues the same way of his brother. Also there are many violence and iniquities.

2.- Today there are less racism but it still happening, we can see that there is less racism in that today there’s a black president.

3.- It depends of what state do you live maybe you can have more privilege or not, but the normal thing is that everybody is equal. They are a good medias to sare that things because we must have the same rights. In public jobs they are equals but in private businesses black people are still discriminated. Because they consider white people a pure raze and more effective people.

4.- In the movie we can see that women, poor people, Asians and Hispanics are discriminated, but about the gay people the film doesn´t say much.

5.- I don´t know if there are racist people nowadays, but I´m completely disagree with that. If I heard some racist remarks I of course I will discuss about this wrong idea.

6.- I don’t know , but if there are some group, the community will try to stop them.

7.- I think that it´s possible but we need many time, because there are many people with a worse mind and we must help this person to change.

8.- I´m agree with all of that. Hate only shows the others, your worst face and your life would be unhappy. Our life is very short to do bad things, it is better to enjoy all the beautiful things that it gaves.
