    1.- At the beginning of the film they are all getting ready for a wedding. Describe the preparations for Nazir's wedding.
    -Nazir is being dressed by his father, George, with special traditional clothes. He has also a watch with his own name in arabic.

    2.- What kind of relationship do they have with the people in the neighbourhood?
    -They have a bad relationship because the neighbours are very racist.

    3.- Describe a Pakistani wedding.
    -A Pakistani wedding is arranged marriage where the families become one. Both wooers eat the same fruit and women becomes “property” of the man.
    4.- What kind of business does the family run?
    -Fish & chips restaurant.

    5.- What do we know about the man's past life in Pakistan?
    -He was married to a pakistani

    6.- Has Zaheed's economic position improved since he arrived in Britain?
    -Yes.

    -He thinks they too modern and they don't look after.

    -He becomes a abuser.

    -I think that she is a brave women, and a good mother.

    -He does, but at the very end of the film.

    -George hit all of his family and his wife it's more tolerant.

    -Yes, women are some kind of slaves that work for the man, and should always obey him.

    -Yes, because the islam isn't the same as christianism, the main reason is the racism.

    -The old are full of prejudgments, but the young people are more tolerant and open minded
    E) What would you have done in Ella/George/Nazir/Tariq/ Abdul ' s situation?(Choose only one character)
    -We in George situation we wouldn't have done the same as him. Instead of hitting we would have argued and talked with their sons, and listened to their opinions. We would have tried to transmit that we wanted the best for them.
    We wouldn't have hitted Ella, as we should respect her because she is his wife.

    - With some of their neighbours they have a great relationshiop (like with Ernest), but with some others no(Ernests' father)

    1- He is wearing a golden dress, a mask, and a watch that his father gave him. The place that they go is like a garage and there were a lot of people watching the ceremony. The girl is wearing a pakistani dress.
    2- A child call Ernest is the friend of Sahid (the youngest son).
    An old man hates this family and his granddaughter is the girlfriend of another son, Tariq.
    The wife of George (Pakistani father) has an english friend. She is english too.
    The children of the street behave bad towards Sahid.
    3- The husband must wear a special dress for the ceremony: golden dress, a mask, and other special clothes. The wife must wear a Pakistani dress, more beautiful than the normal one. It has to be a musulman priest and at the beginning it must sound a pakistani song or something similar.
    4- They have a fish market. They also sell te, fruits and other kind of food but not too strange.
    5- He had a pakistani wife, but he wasn't happy with her, and he got married with an english woman. And now she is his wife and they have 7 children.
    6- Yes because of that they went to England.
    7-They not look after you and they are always drinking and smoking.
    8- He realized that he was losing his family and he had to change his habits and look after his family. He wasn´t listening to his family´s likes or dislikes.
    9- I think she is a good woman, very generous and loving. She is the onlyone who preocupates about her family´s needes.
    10- Yes, at the end of the film he learnt the lesson, because he was going to lose his family, he needed to change.
    A) Is more tolerant his wife because she listens to the family.
    B) Yes, the father treats his wife really bad, like a servant with some privileges too, but not to much.
    C) Yes, because its manners are the cause of the dissagrement in the family. He always does what he wants.
    D)The children think different than their father, because he is an old-fashioned man and he doesn't understand anything that the islamic manners don't say.

    In general the people in the neighborhood are nice with them. They have some english friends.

    The wedding happens in a big room where there is a reception. The boy waits at the altar and then the girl appears. Both of them wear a veil, its function is to don't show their faces. Someone marry them.

    It was a Fish and Chips food.

    We only know that he is marriaged with a paki and he loves Pakistani culture.

    Zaheed's economic position has improved because he arrives to Britain with nothing and he now has a house and a shop.

    He thinks they are not pure.

    George starts to be agresive beacuase his sons don't do the things he want.

    The mother loves her children, she is not racist, she has been educated by english culture and she thinks that she is equal to George.

    He don't learn from his mistakes because his first mistake was trying to merry his first son to a Paki. He run away in the wedding. But he tryed to merry two of his sons to other Pakis.

    His wife because she don't minds what they think, but George always tries to teach them Pakis culture.

    Religion is a cause of conflict beacuse the sons have been educated by english costumes and they don't mind Paki culpture, but his father gives a lot of importance to it.

    1.- Nazir's family were dressed with elegant and special clothes for the ceremony. His father was wearing a suit and a weird hat, his sister was wearing a colorful dress and Nazir was wearing a hat with a kind of sheet that covered his face.
    2.- They have a bad relationship with most of them as they are pakistanis, except for some sons who get on well with some english friends.
    3.- First of all the groom enters to the ceremony with his face covered by a kind of sheet. Then, the bride enters with her face covered as well. After that both of them sit down and look to each other. The priest shows an open box to the groom and he must offer it to the bride. In the end, they are officially married.
    4.- They sell potatoes and fish to their customers.
    5.- We know he got married with a pakistani woman, but then he left her for the british one.
    6.- Yes because his business improved a lot and they earned some money.
    7.-They are bad women because they drink alcohol, they smoke and they don't look after their husbands.
    8.- Although he carries on hurting his family, his actitude changes a little bit as he realizes how he behaves in front of all of them. He starts to talk better to them and listening to what his family says.



    9.- Her situation is really complicated because she is afraid of her husband, but she also feels bad about her sons. We think she must have left her husband a long time ago and take care just of her sons avoiding all the bad treatment she recived.
    10.- At first he doesn't because he continuos hurting his family, but then we think he does, as he feels guilty about what he has done (but not enough).

    POINTS FOR DISCUSSION
    a) His wife is more tolerant with George because she doesn't leave him, but she doesn't tolerate the bad treatment he gives to their sons.
    b)Yes, in the way he hurts, hits and talk to his wife. He thinks he has the authority over her to do whatever he wants and he believes everybody must think like him without caring of the women.
    c) Yes, because they follow the muslim traditions, which are the ones that cause conflict making women feel less than men and many other things.
    d) Inside the family, the old generatios are more possessive and everybody must be respectful with them, while the young ones have less importance and almost anyone shows affect to them.
    e) If I were George, I would have noticed my bad behaviour, so I would have change my mind sooner and feel sorry about my family all my life.

    -Nazirs father brought a watch and a suit for him. The hole family dressed with pakistanis dresses and covered Nazirs face until the ceremony
    2.- What kind of relationship do they have with the people in the neighbourhood?
    - English people don't want pakistanis to live there. George, the father, doesn't like English people too, he doesn`t accept them.
    3.- Describe a Pakistani wedding.
    The duration of the wedding ceremony is about four days. Pakistani wedding traditions are based on rules that are defined in the Holy Quran. Some of the common customs found in Pakistani wedding are Mangni, Mayun, Uptan, Dolki, Rasm E Mehndi, Baraat, Nikah, Mooh Dikhai, Ruksati, Chauthi, and Walima. The bride wears a long skirt-like costume called “bridal lehenga” for the wedding ceremony, and common jewelry worn includes a pair of earrings, teeka, rings, and necklace. Food is a very important part of any Pakistani wedding. It is served after the nikah, and it comes in many varieties of sweets, biriyanis, vegetables, and salads. Non-vegetarian food such as meat and beef is also served.

    The family runs a popular fish and chips shop.

    5.- What do we know about the man's past life in Pakistan?
    We know that George has his first wife in Pakistan.

    Yes.

    He thought that women in Britain are always drinking alcohol and they're bad people.

    He bocomes agressive and possesive. He wants his wife and children to obey him, and he once beats his wife and son.

    She has to suffer the pakistani traditios because of her husband. She is afraid of him. Also, she has to take care of the hole family, because her husband doesn't help at home.

    At the end of the film he seems to understand that he's doing harm to his family.

    His wife Ella, because she protects her sons from George.

    I can identify lot of sexist attitudes against women,..For example, when George beats his wife once. Also, in their religion, women doesn’t have the same human rights like men. George’s wife is always doing thing for George.

    The young generation (George children) don’t like Pakistani religion and it’s habits, they feel English and no Pakistanis, like the mother. Nevertheless, George is a Pakistani who forces his children to feel like Pakistanis. They have different points of view about religion. For example, one son don’t want to marry with the women that his father had chosen him, he wants to marry with an English woman.

    If I were Ella, I wouldn’t have lived with George for so long. If he had continued mistreating his family I would have left him alone and I would have gone somewhere to live with my children.

    - George bougth a watch with Nazir's arabian name and gave them to him. The whg ole family gets dressed in a traditional Pakistani way, and Nazir makes up his eyes. The ceremony includes the bridal couple wearing veils, covering their faces until the end, and then accepting a special fruit.
    2.- What kind of relationship do they have with the people in the neighbourhood?
    - George doesn´t like to talk with nobody because them are not Pakistani. But the rest of the family have diferents friends. Even the family have many problems.

    - The husband never sees his pride before. That's why the tension and the agitation of all the people taking part of the festivity is really high. First everybody talks loudly and then all people become quiet when the pride hidden behind a veil comes in the hall where the ceremony takes place. The woman sits down next to the husband and her mother raises her veil. Also the veil of the man is raised by his sibling. The mother of the pride gives as a ritual a golden ball to the man.

    - When they borne, the circumcision must be performed. They couldn´t choose the person that they like to marry, the family selected the best option.

    - I think yes, because he have his own proyect.
    7.-What opinion does the father have about British women?
    - He thinks that the British women have a more open and liberated society.
    8.- How does the father change in the second part of the film?
    - He learned that their cultures aren´t very different and he stop overvaluing his family.

    - She is a very good mother and protects her children. Sometimes is a bit weak and doesn´t
    say what she think.

    - Yes it does, but the family have to pass many dislikes.

    1- Everything is very luxurious and well made ( clothes, decoration...). The parents take care of every detail and the father wants everything to be as traditional as possible. They do their own rituals.
    2- They have a bad relationship because they don't have the same beliefs.
    3- The man wears a mask that covers his face and she wears a dress that covers her whole body. Everything is very luxurious ann everyone wears bright dresses with a lot decorations and abundant jewellery.
    4- A fish and chips' fast food restaurant.
    5- We only know that he has another wife there but he wasn't happy with her and he married an england woman.
    6- Yes, he has a better life there.
    7- The father thinks that they are very permissive, they are easy women and let their children do what they want.
    8- He becomes more agressive and wants their children to follow the rules of his religion.
    9- She is the one that truly listens to their kids and care about their opinions. She defends them and look after them while trying to calm her husband. She is also very powerful.
    10- No, sometimes it seems that he starts to think about what he have done but then he just keeps doing the same things.
    a) His wife is more tolerant because she lets their children do whatever they want and listens to them.
    b) The father wants his wife to look after their children and he uses her as an object to do what he wants.
    c) Yes it is because the father disagrees with everyone who is not a believer of his religion and wants his children to do what religion tells them.
    d) The old generation just follows traditional rules and thinks that behaving the way they behaved is the right one while young people are more relax and want to try new things. They don't like traditional rules and they often get in disagreements because of that. Also old generations believe more in religion and follow it stricter whereas young people nowadays don't usually have religious beliefs because they do want anybody telling them what to do.
    e) In Ella´s situation we would have called the police to report what my husband is doing to me but we understand that in those times it was harder to do that. We also would have told my kids to be careful and obey everything their father tells them until i found a solution.

    1.During the wedding preparations, George dresses his son Nazir, helps to put on his eye make-up and a veil which he has to wear until the final ceremony. He gives him a watch with Nazir's name in Arabic. .The rest of the family also gets dressed in a traditional Pakistani way and drives off to the mosque in a colorful van.
    2- As the Khan family are pakistani muslims they don't have a very good relationship with the neigthbours because they are foreigners. Their nearest neigthbour (the grandfather of Stella and Earnest) is a very racist man who is supporting a extremely racist political figure. He usually gets angry because his grandchildren are friendly to George's family
    3.Arranged marriages have been an important part of Pakistani society for years. Matches are made after taking into account factors such as the wealth and social standing of their families. When the wedding date is coming, all close relatives are invited for a typical Pakistani wedding that requires a big amount of money. The duration of the wedding ceremony is about four days. Pakistani wedding traditions are based on rules that are defined in the Holy Quran, and it is assumed that they were developed a 1,400 years ago. Nevertheless, many rituals that are performed in Pakistani weddings are not mentioned in Islamic books, and it is believed that these rituals come from Hindu culture. Some of the common customs found in Pakistani wedding are Mangni, Mayun, Dolki, Rasm E Mehndi, Baraat, Nikah, and Walima. Mangni refers to engagement, and Mayun is a custom that requires the bride to be kept in isolation for some days as the process of her beautification is carried out. Food is a very important part of any Pakistani wedding. It is served after the nikah, and it comes in many varieties of sweets, biriyanis, vegetables, and salads. Non-vegetarian food such as beef is also served.
    4 The family runs a fish and chips shop which is ironic because it is a typical british iconic shop ruled by pakistani foreigners.
    5. George originally comes from Islamabad, which in 1971 is in East Pakistan. His first wife isthere and the country is at war with India. He keeps threatening to bring her to England.

    8 As all the family is desafiating him, he get very nervous and more agressive and violent.
    9. We think she is a very complex character. She is torn between her complicated relationship with her husband and her love for her children. We think that when she got married she knew she would have to respect her husband's religious believes and traditions, nevertheless she doesn't give up on her own. Although in the begining of the filmshe finds herself unable to stand up to George, she is very protective with her kids and want only the best for them.
    10 We think that he finally realized that he had to make his family happy, and that he was doing things badly.
    a) We think Ella is more tolerant because she wants her children to be happy and make their own choices and also respects George's traditions and religión.
    b) In fact muslim religión have lots of sexist traditions against women, and as the father is muslim, that traditions are reflected in the family everyday life. He usually says that he is the man of the house and that everyone there have to obey him.
    c) We think the main cause of conflict are the diferences between pakistani culture and british culture. It's not only religion but they also have diferent food, diferent clothes, diferent lifestyles...
    d)The old pakistani generation is very conservative. They think that traditions and acceptance from the Muslim community are very important. George's children, on the other hand, have been born in Britain and have a different point of view. Despite they are forced by their father to follow certain rules and costums and even sent to Urdu classes, they have a much more western mindset.
